We continue to shed CPUs, but many of those shed are probably folks who joined initially but found that their computers were trying to melt, so stopped after one or two WUs. Our hourly folding rate is back above 900k PPH over the past 12 hours.

The team peaked on May 20th and it’s been a mostly downhill trend since then.

Kinja'd!!!

Even so, we are still poised to overtake five teams in the next couple of days.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a dedicated folding rig.  Should initially do 500k PPD, expandable to up to 3m PPD.

Same here, though it’ll be a garage/flea market special. A machine that is only used to browse the internet, listen to Spotify, and host a robust GPU.

You know the story about the rusty GPU the guy on Ebay sent, don’t you? The dispute through Visa sounds like Visa is on my side and I’m waiting to see if the guy wants his GPU back once it’s all over. At his expense, of course... But as ugly as that thing is, all my 20 million points so far were earned with that card. I may put together a machine for out in the garage to support my distance learning teaching studio, move this card out there, and maybe buy a 1070 for in here. I could even have two cards running in here, as my Precision tower has two PCIe slots. I’d like to make 2M PPD, but we’ll see. Hundreds of dollars I’m talking about and I’m finding plenty else to spend money on these days...

Thats where Im at. My one laptop does 25k PPD, my other pushes close to 1M PPD. But neither is really ideal as a folding machine, and the new laptop is my primary, so I turn off folding quite a bit.

Id like to throw together a desktop to put in my basement, where its naturally cooler, right now my laptops are close to an AC return so I suspect its seeing artificially high house temps and cycling my AC more.

What Im thinking about is a Zotac B150 board, it was made for BitCoin mining, it cost something like $30 on eBay, and has 1 PCIe x16 slot and 6 or 7 PCIe x1 slots. But the beauty is in mining (or folding) you push the data to the GPUs in chunks, you aren’t saturating the bus like with gaming, so you get PCI x1-x16 converters (6 of them cost like $20) so you can run multiple GPUs out of the x1 slots. Then you just need GPUs - you can currently snag some P106-90s on eBay for around $60 each, shipped. They are mining cards, basically GT 1050s or 1060s (I think) but slightly neutered. This is where it gets fuzzy because I can’t find solid foldind numbers for them. Ive heard anywhere from 250k to 500k PPD. But 7 would give 1.75M to 3.5M depending on what performance comes out to be.

I priced out a setup using mostly eBay parts for about $300 with 1 P106 card, and then $60 per card after that. Im just trying to find more solid folding numbers on the P106 cards because the flip is 4 cards equals between 1M and 2M PPD at a cost of roughly $240. Right now Best Buy has an RTX 2060 on sale for $260 that pulls a bit over 1M PPD. Looking at power consumption and such, if the P106s do 1M PPD combined , Id rather have the RTX, but if they do 2M then they are more attractive.

Woah: the jargon is strong on that one...

I’ll probably buy a Dell Precision Tower that’ll have two PCIe slots and a decent power supply. Keepin’ it consumer. Jminer is the mining expert.

I’ll be interested to hear what you come up with.

Yeah, we'll see what happens. Though building folding rigs cuts into the Volvo budget, so there's a chance it may not happen. But I can do computers right now, I can't spin wrenches, so my urge to tinker may win out.
